When you've gotten a diagnosis you're not sure about

A second opinion isn't disloyalty. It's responsible care.

Major diagnoses — cancer, surgery recommendations, rare conditions, treatment-resistant illness — deserve a second look. Expert Medical Opinion gets your records reviewed by a board-certified specialist in the relevant field, who provides a written assessment of the diagnosis and recommended treatment plan.

When this is most useful

  • Newly diagnosed cancer (especially before starting treatment)
  • Surgery recommendation that feels significant (spine, joint replacement, organ surgery)
  • Rare or unusual diagnosis
  • Treatment-resistant condition (you've been on multiple therapies without improvement)
  • Conflicting opinions from different doctors
  • Complex chronic illness diagnosis (autoimmune, neurological)
  • Pediatric diagnosis affecting major life decisions

What you'll get

  • Written report with diagnostic confirmation or alternatives
  • Treatment recommendation with rationale
  • Comparison to current treatment plan
  • Optional 30-minute video consultation with the reviewing specialist
  • Coordination with your treating physician if helpful

FAQ

Common questions.

Does insurance cover an expert opinion?
Coverage varies. NY Medicaid often covers specialist consultations when medically appropriate; we'll verify before scheduling. Commercial plans usually cover when there's a clear medical rationale (uncertain diagnosis, contemplating major surgery). Self-pay is $295 for a written review.
Will my current doctor know I'm seeking a second opinion?
Only if you want them to. Many patients prefer to discuss the second opinion with their treating physician after they have the report. Either way, requesting a second opinion is your right and most thoughtful doctors welcome it.
What kinds of specialists do you have?
Our review panel includes board-certified specialists in oncology, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology, urology, and other major specialties. All hold active NY State medical licenses.
How long does it take?
Typically 7-14 days from when we receive complete records. Cancer cases and urgent matters can sometimes be expedited to 3-5 days. We're upfront about timing during the intake call.
Can the reviewing specialist take over my care?
Generally no — Expert Medical Opinion is a consultation product, not a transfer of care. If you want to switch doctors based on the review, we can help you find an in-network NY specialist. Continuity with your treating physician is usually preferable.
