Psychiatry services

What our NY-licensed psychiatrists handle.

Psychiatry at CallMD Now is built around careful diagnosis and conservative prescribing. We don't push medication when therapy is the right answer, and we don't refuse medication when it's the right tool.

📋

Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

60–75 minute comprehensive evaluation. Full history, diagnosis review, medication recommendation if appropriate.

Important: NY State rules on controlled medications

Why we're upfront about ADHD and benzodiazepines.

New York State has specific rules around controlled substance prescribing via telehealth. We follow them carefully — both because the law requires it and because conservative prescribing is good medicine.

Controlled medications (ADHD stimulants, benzodiazepines, certain sleep aids)

  • Require an established psychiatrist-patient relationship
  • May require at least one in-person evaluation per NY State requirements
  • Are not prescribed at a first telehealth visit in most cases
  • Are tracked via the NY State PMP (Prescription Monitoring Program)

Non-controlled options

  • SSRIs, SNRIs, atypical antidepressants — prescribed routinely via telehealth
  • Non-stimulant ADHD options (atomoxetine, guanfacine) — prescribed by telehealth
  • Mood stabilizers (lithium, lamotrigine, valproate) — prescribed and monitored by telehealth
  • Antipsychotics — prescribed and monitored by telehealth
FAQ

Common questions.

How long does a psychiatry visit take?
Initial evaluations run 60–75 minutes. Follow-up medication management appointments are 20–30 minutes. We don't do 15-minute med checks — that's not enough time to get this right.
Will I get prescribed medication at the first visit?
Sometimes yes, often no. The first visit is primarily diagnostic. Many patients leave with a plan that includes therapy referral, lab work to rule out medical contributors (thyroid, B12, vitamin D), and a follow-up to start medication once we have the full picture. We don't rush prescribing.
Can you prescribe Adderall, Vyvanse, Xanax, Klonopin?
For controlled substances, NY State telehealth rules require established care and may require in-person evaluation. We don't prescribe these at a first visit. If you're already on a controlled substance and need continuity, bring your records — we can often take over care after appropriate evaluation.
Do you take NY Medicaid for psychiatry?
Yes. Psychiatric care is covered by all major NY Medicaid Managed Care plans at $0 copay for most members. Commercial insurance copays vary; we'll tell you yours before your visit.
Can you adjust medications my other doctor prescribed?
Yes, with your previous prescriber's records. We do a full review of what you're on, why, and what's working — and adjust carefully. We're not in the business of changing things just to change them.

The right diagnosis. The right medication. Or none at all.
