Prediabetes is reversible — for now

1 in 3 NYC adults has prediabetes. Most don't know.

If your fasting glucose is 100–125, or your A1c is 5.7–6.4, you have prediabetes. Without intervention, ~25% of prediabetics develop Type 2 diabetes within 3-5 years. The good news: structured lifestyle programs (the CDC's Diabetes Prevention Program / DPP) cut that risk by more than half.

Our CDC-recognized DPP program

  • 12 months: weekly meetings for 6 months, then monthly
  • Trained lifestyle coach (in your language) — Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole programs available
  • Goal: 5–7% body weight loss + 150 min/week activity
  • Small groups (8–15 people) — you'll know your cohort
  • Cultural-appropriate nutrition guidance (groceries from your usual store)
  • Quarterly check-ins with a NY-licensed clinician to track progress

Insurance coverage

  • NY Medicaid Managed Care: covered for eligible members (most prediabetics qualify) at $0
  • Medicare: covered as Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP)
  • Most commercial plans cover under ACA preventative benefits

FAQ

Common questions.

How do I know if I have prediabetes?
A fasting glucose of 100-125 mg/dL or an A1c of 5.7-6.4% indicates prediabetes. If you haven't been tested recently and have risk factors (overweight, family history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, age 45+, certain ethnic backgrounds at higher risk including Black, Latino, South Asian, East Asian), we can order labs at Quest or LabCorp.
How long is the program?
12 months total: weekly sessions for the first 6 months, then monthly for the second 6 months. About 26 sessions in total. Each session is 60 minutes.
Will I really lose weight in DPP?
The average participant who attends most sessions loses 5–7% of body weight — for a 200-lb person, that's 10-14 lbs over the year. The bigger goal: maintaining that loss long-term, which DPP has stronger evidence for than crash diets.
What if I miss a week or fall off?
Normal and expected. Life happens. Our coaches focus on getting you back on track without shame. The data shows that attending most (not all) sessions is what predicts success.
Can I do DPP alongside GLP-1 medications?
Yes, and many of our patients do — for prediabetes patients with BMI ≥ 30, the combination is highly effective. We co-manage carefully and monitor for hypoglycemia (rare but possible).
